Cope-Evans family papers, 1732-1911.

Letters; also marriage certificates, photographs, friendship book, estate related papers and account books, computer disks and other papers of the Quaker families Cope and Evans of Germantown (Philadelphia, Pa.). Bulk of collection consists of approx. 2,600 letters chiefly between family members. Letters discuss family, friends and home life, reflecting the social environment of relatively well-to-do Quaker families: letters of Mary Cope (1766-1825) to her children at Westtown Boarding School contain spiritual and practical advice; also letters from school by Henry, Francis and William D. Cope to parents; later letters of brothers Henry, Alfred and William D. Cope discuss family shipping firm begun by father Thomas P. Cope and family land interests in Susquehanna County (Pa.); letters of sisters Clementine, Caroline and Annette Cope include travel letters from Europe, Clementine Cope's letters also include those written while teaching at a Freedmen's Association School in Baltimore (1865). Letters of Francis R. Cope (1821-1909) and Thomas P. Cope (1823-1900) while at Haverford College (1835-1838); letters of Anna S. and Francis R. Cope discuss home life, children, family and friends' activities; letters of Francis R. Cope also discuss his travel in Virginia after the Civil War (1866) for Freedmen's Relief Association; letters of Elizabeth S. Cope discuss family, travel news; letters of Rachel C. and Jonathan Evans discuss children, family and health concerns, including daughter Anna Cope Evans' treatment and recovery from nervous breakdown (1900); also 14 letters (1901) of Anna Cope Evans (b. 1875) from "Bournewood" (Bournewood Hospital for Mental Diseases, Brookline, Mass.); other families represented include Brown, Drinker and Haines. Also marriage certificates (1759-1847); copies of photographs (Hartshorne, Yarnall and other families); friendship book of Francis R.
